What is a Nutritionist?

There are many nutritionists around and as many different approaches.  All legitimate nutrition professionals should have at least an R.D. (Registered Dietitian), and if not an RD (which requires a bachelor’s degree), then at least a master’s degree in nutrition.  Please be aware that other “nutritionists” without formal education in biosciences such as biochemistry, organic chemistry and physiology may not be best suited to your individual situation. Registered Dietitians and master’s level nutritionists have received the education and experience; and seek continued training to further their education in nutrition.

Why work with me?

I have a bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition, and a master’s degree in Nutrition & Clinical Dietetics. I have chosen a professional route different from the RD-track, having pursued a graduate degree immediately after graduation instead of taking the RD exam.  Upon the advice of several professors from graduate school, I studied for the CNS examination; the designation awarded by the American College of Nutrition.  The CNS designation was, until recently, only available to doctorate (PhD) level and Medical Doctor (MD) professionals, indicating they had obtained specific additional education in human nutrition.  In the late 1990′s this designation was opened to master’s level nutrition professionals, and I took and passed the exam in 2004.

As part of my personal dedication to nutrition excellence and as required by the American College of Nutrition and the American Dietetic Association, I obtain at least 15 continuing education credits in nutrition every year.  I have received a certification from the American Dietetic Association for Adult Weight Management, and receive training each year in cardiovascular disease, lipid disorder management, eating disorder therapy, and a host of other topics relevant to my client base.

My approach.

I believe that good nutrition should not difficult to obtain, nor should it be expensive or confusing.  Most of my practice involves nutrition education and dispelling myths that are ubiquitous in today’s mainstream media.  I believe in sound, science-based approaches and seek to provide the best nutrition information to my clients, to fit their particular situation, goals, and lifestyle.  My approach is to act as your nutrition coach, with you setting the goals and me helping you achieve them.

What’s required of you as a client.

A successful relationship will require active participation.  This means that when we agree, together, on a reasonable nutrition or health goal, you will work towards achieving your goal.  I can’t do it for you.  Only you can, and when we work together as a team, you will achieve whatever goals you set for yourself.

What I promise as your nutritionist.

As your nutritionist I promise to help you identify your goal(s), develop a specific plan to achieve them, and become your coach to help you achieve what you desire.  I treat my clients with respect and courtesy, and make every attempt to accommodate schedules, phone support and email support.  In short, I put my clients first.
