Eating Disorders

Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating

All are very complex disorders where food is the focus, but rarely the real issue. Not only does an individual with an eating disorder endure pain and spend precious energy coping with it, family and friends also suffer. My experience with disordered eating is long and personal.

Eating DisordersMy professional expertise was cultivated at the Anorexia and Bulimia Center of Hawaii (‘Ai Pono) where for three years I was the nutrition therapist for dozens of adult women. I received professional coaching from one of the nation’s premier eating disorder experts, Francie White, MS, RD, and more formal training from Molly Kellogg, MS, RD, LCSW. Most importantly, while at ‘Ai Pono I worked under the close supervision of Anita Johnston, PhD, author of Eating In the Light of the Moon and international eating disorder expert.

My approach to eating disorder treatment is two-fold. First, I require my clients to seek concurrent treatment with a mental health specialist. This is because the successful treatment of eating disorders requires a team approach. Second, I know that an eating disorder is not only about food. As a nutritionist it is my job to provide nutrition education and meal planning as a tool for recovery. Without proper nutrition, the intense emotional work required to overcome an eating disorder cannot be accomplished.
